MORE than 4,000 people took advantage of last weekend to throng the Bukit Mertajam Country Club for a family food carnival.

To make the event merrier, a host of celebrities assisted the organising committee of the food carnival.

The aim was to raise literacy awareness and collect funds for the education of children.

The event was jointly organised by the Penang State Public Library and Convent Bukit Mertajam Alumni Association.

Among the artistes present were Ning Baizura, Fauziah Nawi, Zizan Nin, Farah Alia and Tony Eusoff.

They participated in story-telling sessions and theatre workshops as well as played traditional games.

The event kicked off with Ning Baizura belting out a Bee Gees tune of ‘To Love Somebody’ before she was joined by other artistes and organising committee members.

Present also were organising chairman Dr Roland Lim Swee Guan, association chairman Datin Seri Zainab Abd Kader, Penang State Public Library director Shukriah Yon and project chairman Irene Ewe.

Dr Lim said the association set up several food and beverage stalls to raise funds. All of the proceeds will be channelled to deserving students from Convent Bukit Mertajam in the form of scholarships and bursaries.

‘‘Though we targeted about RM70,000, we only managed to get RM50,000,’’ he said.

‘‘We propose to make the event an annual affair,’’ said Dr Lim.

He said the artistes donated seven boxes of their used clothing and shoes to be auctioned for charity.

The proceeds will be donated to students in need.

He said that Malaysian astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor also donated four T-shirts and a neck tie all duly signed and photographed for the auction.

Dr Lim also thanked the management of the country club for allowing the premises to be used free of charge.

He said the library officials also carried out a membership drive to encourage children to read.
